![]() Expanded allows cards from every set going all the way back to Black & White, only ever growing. Standard allows cards from the past 2-ish years, and drops old cards every year. There are two formats officially recognized by TPCi: Standard and Expanded. This is further mitigated by receiving more free packs, which I talk more about below. In Live, packs never contain more than five cards, but there's a small chance to have one of the cards replaced with an additional rare card. Note: redeeming a code from a real life pack does not guarantee the digital pack will contain the same cards. Usually, this means 10/11 cards, but if you redeem a code from a smaller real life pack, the digital pack is smaller, too. If you open a booster pack in Online, it matches the structure of a real life pack. In Live, if you obtain a card you already have the maximum number of copies of, the extra will automatically be converted to credits, and those credits can be exchanged for the card(s) of your choice. Whereas Online features a user-to-user trading system trading system to help you obtain the cards you want, Live features a "crafting" system, which is more in line with other modern digital card games. ![]() Additionally, because Live is still in beta, cards from the Black & White and X & Y series are not yet fully implemented, though they will be eventually. Consequently, cards from the HGSS series do not exist in Live. Live, being a much newer game, only concerns itself with the tournament formats officially recognized by The Pokemon Company International (TPCi). HGSS cards aren't used in any official tournaments these days, but they still exist in Online, and you can use them in the "Legacy" format if you're curious. When Online launched a decade ago, cards from HeartGold & SoulSilver series were tournament legal, so they were included in Online. It's technically possible to access the game elsewhere via VPN shenanigans, but this is not officially supported. However, because it is still in beta, it is currently only officially available in Canada and Mexico. Live is designed first and foremost for iPhones and Android phones, but is also available for Windows computers, Macs, and tablets. It is also technically possible to sideload the game on Android phones, but this is not officially supported. Online is available for Windows computers, Macs, iPads, and Android tablets. These are some of the most important differences between the old and new clients: ![]() Pokémon Trading Card Game Live is Online's in-development successor. Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is the current digital client for the Pokemon TCG. When you redeem the codes, you can open the packs and the cards are added to your collection or exchanged for credits.TL DR: Use PTCG Online because PTCG Live (Online's in-development successor) is currently restricted to Canada and Mexico only and too buggy even for them. This can only be done on Android and PC, with iOS requiring you to redeem the codes on the official website. The final option is the ability to redeem codes from code cards found in Pokémon Trading Card Game products. These booster packs contain less cards than those redeeemed from code cards in real life pokémon Trading Card Game packs, offering just 5 cards per pack. You have the ability to change the specific set tha t you are buying and can purchase them in 1, 3 or 6 bundles. The next option allows you to buy Booster Packs for the various sets. These items are always rotating with new options available. These will offer a variety of cards as well as booster packs for a collection of gems. The first option for the shop is the bundles. ![]() Obtained for the 5th copy of a card in your collection or through Battle Pass and levelling up Purchase Booster Packs and Bundles in the shop This game does not have any microtransactions.Ĭomplete quests, Battle Pass or exchange Crystals These let you purchase packs, booster packs and more using the various in-game currencies you earn by playing the game.
